Artificial turf (or artificial lawn) is a product that simulates the appearance and texture of natural grass, made from synthetic materials such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) or nylon. It is used in residential and commercial spaces, sports fields, playgrounds and commercial environments.
Construction Materials
Polyethylene (PE): Soft and natural in appearance, ideal for homes and children's areas.
Polypropylene (PP): Harder, cheaper, used in decorative areas.
Nylon: Very durable, more expensive, suitable for heavy use (e.g. stadiums).
Structure & Layers
Blades: Mimic natural grass.
Backing: Usually two layers for stability.
Drainage holes: To allow water to pass through.
Infill: E.g. quartz sand or rubber for stability, upright fibers and shock absorption.
Advantages
Minimal maintenance: Does not require watering, mowing, fertilizing.
Durability: Withstands heavy use, is not damaged by weather conditions.
Permanently green appearance: Maintains aesthetics regardless of the season.
Suitable for shady or dry areas.
Easy installation on terraces, balconies, indoors.
Suitable for children and pets (as long as it is of good quality).
Disadvantages
High initial installation cost, especially with a quality substrate.
Unbearable temperature in summer, especially in dark colors and with sunshine.
Does not contribute positively to the environment: Does not photosynthesize, does not absorb CO₂.
Possibility of deterioration over time: The fibers may fade or "fall off".
Accumulation of bacteria and odors: If not cleaned frequently.
Difficulty in recycling after end of life.
Applications
Domestic use: Gardens, yards, terraces.
Commercial properties: Exhibition spaces, hotels, roof gardens.
Sports: Football fields (FIFA-approved), tennis courts, hockey.
Schools and playgrounds.
Areas with drought or water restrictions.
Maintenance (although low)
Occasional washing with water.
Cleaning from leaves/debris.
Combing to keep the fibers upright.
Renewal of the infill (if any).
⏳ Lifespan
8 to 15 years depending on:
Material quality.
Intensity of use.
Sun exposure.
Maintenance.
♻️ Ecological Impact
There is criticism for contributing to microplastic pollution.
New products offer eco-friendly infill and recyclable materials.
Some countries are considering restrictions on artificial turf sports fields due to environmental concerns.
